Dress Code

Like most dance studios, we have a dress code for our children's classes.  Our dress code allows instructors to see what the students are doing with their bodies, and encourages the students to concentrate on the dancing.   We expect dancers to be dressed neatly with their hair appropriately pulled back. Details on what is allowed in each of our classes are listed in the table at the bottom of this page. Information about dressing for our summer camps and classes can be found on our Summer Dance page. Please call the studio if you have any questions about what can or cannot be worn.

Students who are just trying classes should call the studio before purchasing dance clothes.  We will tell you what you may wear until you have decided on a class.

General Guidelines: All tights, shoes, and optional accessories must be traditional dancewear and not street clothes.  All attire must be modest and formfitting. Dancewear can be purchased at local dance shops or online dance stores. No street clothes, t-shirts, gym shorts, sweatshirts, or sweatpants are allowed. Baggy dancewear is not allowed (except in hip-hop classes).

Questions: If you have a question about a new item of attire you have purchased, bring the item with you (not on you) to the studio to be approved. Do not remove the tags or throw out the receipts in case you have to return the item.

Tights:  All tights must be footed (or convertible), except for modern, contemporary, acro, and tumbling classes, which require footless (or convertible) tights.  Any brand can be worn; see the chart below for allowable and preferred colors.

Recital Tights: Students who will be participating in the May Recital will need to wear a specific brand and color of tights as part of their costume. These tights are also suitable for wearing to class. We wll give you details in the spring as to which color tights your class will need. We usually require Bloch brand; style numbers are as follows: Adult footed T0920L, Child footed T0921G, Adult convertible T0935L, Child convertible T0935G, Adult footless T0940L, Child footless T0940L. Typical required colors are pink, salmon, light tan, or black.

Leotards:  Leotards are required for most classes. Optional attire is attire worn over a leotard and not in place of.

Ballet skirts: Ballet skirts are optional, and may only be worn if they are no longer than mid-thigh.  No tutus are permitted.

Jazz Attire: Jazz pants, capris, dance shorts, formfitting tank tops and dance tops are allowed, but must be sensible, modest, form fitting, and approved by the studio. Jazz attire may not be worn in Ballet classes.

Hair: Hair is generally worn in a ponytail or bun or otherwise fastened away from the face, so that it does not get in the way, especially during turns.  Tumbling students should wear two pigtails or buns, since a single ponytail or bun would interfere with some movements (such as forward rolls).

Shoes: If you have dance shoes of a different color or style that still fit, talk to the studio before buying new ones. Students at or below Child 5 level may obtain ballet and tap shoes from a store like Payless. All other students should consider purchasing a higher quality of dance shoes from a local dance shop or online dance store. The prices at Payless and dance stores are similar.

Jazz/Lyrical Shoe Colors: Students in our level 5 jazz classes or above should obtain either the SoDanca JZ45 Carmel Color or the Bloch S0495L Tan Neo Flex; both are tan jazz shoes. They may wear this shoe to both our lyrical and jazz classes. Students in Level 4 and below may obtain any tan jazz shoe. Payless Shoes does not carry tan jazz shoes; the Brandywine Dance Shop does. If you still have black jazz shoes that fit, you may wear them to this year’s classes, however for performances, you will need to obtain tan.

Shoe Exchange: Outgrown last year's shoes? Trying a new style of dance for the first time? Check our outgrown shoe exchange box. If you find a pair of shoes that fit, you may have them. Our children grow so fast, and the shoes we buy for them are often outgrown well before they are worn out. If you have a pair of shoes you don't need, rubber band them together and place them in the bin. Thanks!

Multiple Classes on the Same Day: If a student has Ballet and/or Modern classes in combination with any other form of dance (tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, etc), they need to have the appropriate clothing for each class even if the classes are on the same day. Students should come to the studio dressed in ballet/modern attire (for their ballet/modern classes), and can bring “jazzy” accessories with them to put on top (when they take their other classes). They should not, however, wear the jazz attire in the Ballet and Modern classes.

Note: If students are usually good with their dress and they forget some article of clothing for a class, it’s ok. We would rather have them there enjoying class, than panicking about their clothes.

What students should do with their non-dance street clothing?

We have placed clothing hooks down our long hallway by the water fountain, and shoe mats under the benches. If you are leaving items at the studio:
